Geneseek D N A Info

We have consistant quality throughout our herd.
This is a pen of barrows in finisher.
All these hogs carry the berkshire meat quality, some of the best pork in the entire industry.

Geneseek DNA trait markers

We have also utilized a validated porcine trait DNA marker testing. Geneseek is a commercial company specializing in DNA marker blood testing. This info was taken from seven genes which impact:

Feed intake
Weight gain
Lean growth
Fat content

We have used this data to evaluate various characteristics of our herd genetics.

CCKAR

This is an allele associated with physiological control of feed intake and hunger fulfillment in market hogs. Hogs with both copies ofthis gene variant, G/G, have been shown to have:

5% higher daily feed intake
3% higher weight gain
3% fewer days to 180 kg

In our test, over 90% of Tuthill Berkshires tested were homozygous, G/G. for this trait. Our Berkshire hogs will go to the feeder and grow.

MC4R

This is a gene marker for backfat thickness, lower feed intake, and lean growth.

If the animal is homozygous for the G/G variant they tend to have 9% less backfat and a lower feed intake.
If the animal is homozygous for the A/A variant they tend to have increased lean growth, and increased feed intake.
If the animal is heterozygous A/G for these variants, they will show a combination ofthe above mentioned traits.

In our group the results were:
41% A/G
36% G/G
23% A/A

This shows a genetic diversity in our herd. We are breeding now to combine the best ofthese traits and will continue this process in our pursuit of excellence. Our genetics will work in your herd, don't beafraid to include Tuthill Berkshire in your breeding program.
